Cannes poster art: five gems
David Liu | 18 April 2011
The 64-year-old Cannes Film Festival boasts a rich history of excellent poster designs. Here are some personal favorites:

2011
The 2011 poster features a photograph of actress Faye Dunaway, taken by Jerry Schatzberg in 1970. The soft contours of her body mesh with the pencil-thin outline of the numbers, creating a juxtaposition of indisputable elegance.

1963
Original illustration by Jean-Denis Maillart. The woman’s hair consists of celluloid strips, and the festival’s signature golden palm leaf adds to the mythological allure.

1975
Polish painter Wojciech Siudmak brings a surrealist touch to the Cannes tradition. Dozens of eyes float in clouds overlooking a barren terrain; we see the contents of one fallen fruit, and that is cinema itself.

1982
Cinema the unstoppable juggernaut. Artwork by director Federico Fellini.

1985
From the old to the new: a tribute to 19th century British photographer Eadweard Muybridge, pioneer of the motion picture concept.
